You can never think up on your own all of the non-sinister explanations for that fact, a cautionary tale…
Since the bombing on Monday, internet communities have been pillaging through shared evidence at a rate that is nothing short of impressive. Reddit.com/r/findbostonbombers is one of these communities who have been trying to find any clue possible, and there are several. Many submitters were standing in the crowd that day very close to the point of detonation. Here is an example of what people are analyzing.
Do you notice the two men standing next to each other, one in the white hat and the other in a blue track jacket? Many other people did. Actually so many people took notice that the FBI did too.
Now we have reason to believe that this guy (Mr. White Hat) was in this van.
Here is a screenshot of his facebook page concerning going to the courthouse.
He’s innocent, and actually an avid runner who happened to be picked up by vigilante internet detectives. Speculation led to the endangerment of this guys life, as random individuals were attacked on many occasions on the day of the bombing in fear. It’s not too much of a stretch to see how this guy could be in trouble with the public, even if the police are no longer interested. Rumor looks a lot like truth in panic.
Errol Morris knows a lot about rumor. He was the one who discovered and named the infamous “Umbrella Man’ in the Zapruder film of JFK’s assassination
We will all make our own decisions about who we blame and how valid their guilt is. Before you go about blaming someone realize how little we know at this point, and how damaging the speculation can be to the entire investigation and to individuals.
What do you think? Is the media jumping to too many conclusions or are they right to intensely analyze every possibility in the public eye? Leave a comment and share your thoughts.
